Doc Martens

The early 90's was the year of the grunge look for most. This is the time when girl would be wearing sun dresses paired with their Dr. Martens boots. As for the men, the plaid shirt tied on the waste was some sort of fashion statement (though I don't get the idea of tying the shirt when they're not gonna use it).

I am not here to talk about the grunge look as that is a whole new entry. What I would like to talk about are the favorite boots during my high school days, the Dr. Martens. I remember the "rich kids" of the school would be owning a couple of pairs of these boots. Some of them would even design them using textile paint. Most of them had either the black or the maroon-ish color. I on the other hand was left envying my classmates who had a pair. My parents, particularly my mom wouldn't want to buy me a pair because she said it looked like combat boots. LOL!

Birks in the 90's

Before flip flops ruled the entire metro, I remember in the late 90's that people in my university also had a favorite footwear. These are comfortable sandals. I am talking about Birkenstock sandals.

A lot of students in my school would wear these sandals with matching printed socks because our school didn't allow wearing of sandals without socks. I remember having so many pairs of cute and colorful socks from Marks & Spencer. The sandals that time are mostly neutral colors so to really stand out, the socks are also important. I had two pairs of Birkenstock footwear. One was the black plastic sandals and the other one was the blue clog.

Mighty Kid and Gregg Shoes

Since I am confused by the fact that people here are going crazy over a pair of rubber flip flops then I'd like to share the popular footwear back in the 80's.

There are two actually. We have the Gregg shoes and the Might Kid rubber shoes.

As far as I can remember, my mom would always insist that I wear Gregg shoes as my school shoes. She said that it's one of the most durable. You see I have a way (unintentionally of course) of making my shoes look like it was stepped on by all the people inside Havaianas's stores. I'd sometimes go home with the front of my shoe partly open with matching peeking socks. I really just walk like a normal kid. I do play during recess time and while waiting for our school bus to arrive in the afternoon. But other than that, I have no clue as to why at the second or third quarter of the school year, my school shoes looked really worn out. With Gregg shoes however, they did stay "upright" for the whole year and would probably survive the following year.

I think Gregg shoes are still available today but I'm just not sure if they're the same thing and if they're as durable as the ones I wore before.

The other one that I mentioned the Mighty Kid rubber shoes. These were big back then. Most of my schoolmates had these when we were in grades 1 to 2 I think. One of the probable reasons why kids love them is because of the velcro. They no longer need to recite the "bunny in the whole" bit while tying their shoelaces. It's a shame though that I can't find any pictures of it online. I knew it was a long time ago and I think the company shut down before the 90's (correct me if I'm wrong) but I was hoping I could have a glimpse of it again. The nearest shoe design similar to that of Might Kid are these shoes from Nike. It has the same chunky style and of course the velcro strap.
